5th January 2026
Niger 🇳🇪| On January 5, 2026, around 2:00 AM, the home of the prefect of Torodi, near the Burkina Faso border in western Niger, was besieged.
🔹The prefect and his family—his wife and children—were killed, as well as a seventh person who has not yet been identified. No losses were reported among the security forces. The assailants left the scene with three National Guard vehicles, one armed with a 12.7mm machine gun and another with a light machine gun.
The terrorists took advantage of the attack to free two of their members, who were then taken into custody. The vehicle of the prefect's secretary general was also found burned out in the prefecture's courtyard.
🔹That same night, Katiba Hanifa (JNIM) claimed to have seized control of two Nigerien army positions in the town, and then shelled the military barracks in the Tillabéri region using mortars.
🔸According to witnesses, Katiba Hanifa (JNIM) maintained control of the town between 2:00 and 5:00 AM on January 5, 2026.
It should be noted that Torodi is located in the center of Katiba Hanifa's (JNIM) area of influence.
