Landmine Evidence Found in Border Areas, Thai Navy Condemns Cambodia

The Royal Thai Navy says it has discovered maps, weapons caches and large numbers of anti-personnel landmines in former Cambodian positions along the Thai–Cambodian border, prompting a strong condemnation of what it called serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Rear Admiral Paraj Ratanajaipan, the navy’s spokesperson, said the evidence was uncovered during operations by the Chanthaburi–Trat Border Defense Command to secure Ban Nong Ree and Ban Tha Sen, areas previously occupied and used by Cambodian forces.

In Ban Nong Ree, authorities found maps detailing the locations of buried anti-personnel landmines and improvised explosive devices, which the navy said pointed to deliberate planning aimed at causing harm to Thai troops. In Ban Tha Sen, near the Thomoda Casino, weapons caches and large numbers of improvised anti-personnel landmines were discovered, indicating that prohibited weapons had been stored and employed in civilian-inhabited areas.

The navy said eight Thai soldiers have been injured by anti-personnel landmines as a result of these actions, describing them as an indiscriminate threat to both military personnel and civilians.

Rear Admiral Paraj said the use, emplacement and retention of anti-personnel landmines constitute a grave breach of the Ottawa Convention and international humanitarian law. He said the navy would compile all relevant evidence for further state-level action, including notifying the international community and relevant organizations.
