A violent dawn broke in the municipality of Escuinapa, Sinaloa, this Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
From the early hours of the day, bursts of gunfire from high-powered weapons, explosions, and plumes of black smoke from burning vehicles marked the beginning of a day of chaos caused by clashes between rival groups of hitmen.
The situation has forced a complete shutdown of activities in the municipal seat, leaving the population in a state of total lockdown and anxiety.
Reports to the 911 emergency system began to flow around 6:00 a.m. Residents of the outskirts, particularly near the El Roblito neighborhood, described a scene of war.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a resident described the fear gripping the streets: “Gunshots are being heard everywhere. We're in contact with relatives in other areas, and they're reporting the same thing: constant bursts of gunfire and trucks speeding by, but nobody dares to go outside. We're under total lockdown.”
A thick column of black smoke rising from the El Roblito area was visible from various points in the city.
The impact of the violence was immediate on the social and educational life of the municipality. Several schools announced the suspension of classes and the traditional “posadas” (Christmas celebrations) scheduled for the day.
School administrators and authorities opted to cancel the December festivities to protect the safety of students and teachers from the imminent risk of being caught in the crossfire.
The streets are nearly empty, with very few businesses open and an almost complete work stoppage.
Mobility in the southern part of the state has also been severely affected.
A complete road closure was reported on the section of highway connecting Rosario and Escuinapa.
This preventative measure has left dozens of truckers and motorists stranded, waiting for safe passage or instructions from the National Guard.
State sources confirmed that it is a direct confrontation between rival gangs.
Despite the magnitude of the events, as of this writing, there has been no confirmation of direct intervention by federal or municipal forces to regain control of the area, while the residents of Escuinapa remain waiting for the gunfire to cease.
