On 19 November 2025, in Machala (El Oro), an unknown number of unidentified individuals rigged a drone with homemade explosive charges and blew it up inside the Zaruma pavilion of a local prison. The explosion was targeted at members of the Los Lobos Box gang, described as Saobox gang, but it detonated before reaching its target. The officers fired warning gunshots into the air to maintain order among the inmates. Despite the structural damage, there were no injuries. Because of this around 80 inmates were removed from the prison with destination to the Turi prison in the Azuay province. There were no fatalities.
