SAA event in Nigeria on Thu 20th November 2025
20th November 2025
Nigeria 🇳🇬
On November 26, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a nationwide "security emergency" in response to a dramatic surge in violence and kidnappings, particularly in the north of the country.
🔷 In a televised address, the president ordered the immediate recruitment of 20,000 additional law enforcement officers, bringing the total number of personnel deployed to 50,000.
🔹 This decision came the day after a UN announcement calling on Nigeria to take "all necessary legal measures to end mass kidnappings."
The UN raised the alarm after a series of abductions of more than 400 people since November 17 in the north and center of the country. 🔶
Among recent attacks:
- On November 17: 25 schoolgirls were abducted from a girls' school in Maga (Kebbi State), where the headmaster was killed.
- On November 20, in Niger State, more than 300 students and 12 teachers were captured at a boarding school.
With the declaration of a state of emergency, Nigeria is attempting to break with months, even years, of stagnation in the face of crime.
