The Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) killed at least six Islamist terrorists in Mandava village, Muidumbe district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, during an operation that took place in mid-November.

According to sources cited by the Portuguese News Agency Lusa, during the operation several other terrorists were injured. The clashes took place in Namilango, 40 kilometres from the Muidumbe district capital, when the terrorists fell into an ambush.

“They fell into an ambush by our forces while they were travelling in the lower area of Namilango”, a source said.Between 12 and 16 November, groups of insurgents attacked the communities of Muambula and Nampanha, in Muidumbe, with at least three dead and two people kidnapped, in addition to several injured.

Almost 1,600 people fled from Muidumbe district, in a few days due to the attacks by terrorist groups, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).According to the latest field report from the IOM, since 13 November, the district has seen “a significant presence of non-state armed groups,” causing “displacement due to insecurity and fear of new attacks in the surrounding areas.

”According to the IOM report, the field teams of the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) recorded the arrival of 1,593 people, from 490 households, at the three resettlement centres closest to Muidumbe, most of them women and children.

A survey by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) states that Cabo Delgado recorded 11 violent attacks between 27 October and 9 November, mainly involving groups linked to the Islamic State extremist movement, causing ten civilian deaths.

According to the latest ACLED report, the 2,251 violent incidents recorded since October 2017, when the armed insurgency began in Cabo Delgado, caused 6,316 deaths.(AIM)
