A family was the victim of a violent shooting attack on Saturday night on a state highway in the municipality of El Higo, in the Huasteca region of Veracruz. The tragic crime left two people dead: the mother, identified as María Elena N, and her 11-year-old son, Jonathan Alexander. In addition, two other men were seriously injured and admitted to a local hospital.
Police reports indicate that the four members of a family were traveling in a van when they were intercepted and shot at near the community of Puente Nuevas. The occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured, but the driver managed to drive to a nearby health clinic. There, the mother and child were pronounced dead. At the scene of the attack, the criminals left dozens of tire spikes, which caused other motorists to be affected. This incident adds to the 53 cases of extreme violence with 65 victims that Veracruz has suffered during the first half of the year, according to a tally by the civil organization Causa en Común.
