A gate to an apartment building was severely damaged and residents had to be evacuated after an explosion in Norrköping on Sunday evening. It is the second explosion within 24 hours, this time in the Sandbyhov area.

Just over half an hour before the explosion, the police responded to a call about a dangerous object in the Lindö district.

– I cannot say for sure that the events are connected, but it is central to how we proceed with the investigation now, says Olle Älveroth, the police's press spokesman on Monday morning.

The alarm was received by SOS Alarm at 11:05 p.m. and the police sent several patrols to the scene. Pictures from the scene showed significant damage to a gate to an apartment building, where several windows had been broken.

Residents of the apartment building were sheltered while police and the National Bomb Squad investigated the crime scene. During the morning, residents were allowed to leave the property.

– When the external blockade was lifted, the evacuation was also lifted, says Olle Älveroth at the police at 8:30 a.m.

No one was injured in the explosion.

The incident is being investigated as public destruction and a violation of the Flammable and Explosives Act. The police do not want to comment on whether anyone is a suspect in the case.

– Currently, we have a sensitive investigation situation and it is being led by prosecutors, says Olle Älveroth.

About half an hour before the explosion in Sandbyhov, the police responded to an alarm about a suspected dangerous object in Lindö.

The blockades were lifted after four o'clock at night, but it is still unclear whether it was a dangerous object.

The explosion in Sandbyhov is the second within a day. Early Sunday morning, at a quarter to four, another explosion occurred in Norrköping, causing major damage to a gate and a man in his 70s being taken to hospital.

– It is too early to say whether there is any connection, says Fredrik Andersson about the three events.

Information for guardians

Near the property where the explosion occurred is a preschool, after-school center and school. The principal at Sandbyhovsskolan sent information to guardians on Monday morning. It says that there is no threat to the school and that operations will continue as usual.

– In addition to information for guardians, we have mentoring time this morning. This means that we talk to all students, check the situation and address any questions and concerns, says Ann-Sofie Selander, principal of Sandbyhovsskolan.
