At least a dozen soldiers were killed Wednesday in a jihadist attack in western Niger, AFP learned Friday from a local source. Niger is plagued by attacks from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in the Sahel (IS), particularly in its western region. It also faces deadly actions by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the southeast. The Nigerien junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, which seized power in July 2023 after a coup, is struggling to contain this violence.
Wednesday's attack took place in the town of Garbougna, located in the vast Tillabéri region, near Burkina Faso and Mali, where jihadist groups are very active. A local source told AFP that the attack left " about ten dead " among the security forces, specifying that the soldiers attacked " were providing security at a bridge construction site ." According to Wamaps, a West African journalists' group specializing in security news in the Sahel, the death toll stands at 17, with 34 seriously wounded.
