On 18 April 2021, unknown militants shelled the Balad Air Base with 5 Katyusha rockets in Sala Al Din. 1 rocket over shot the base and hit an adjacent area. The strike injured two foreign contractors and three Iraqi soldiers from the Iraqi regiment stationed at the base. The rockets originated from Khalis district. The base houses Iraqi forces and US contractors but no Global Coalition Forces.
