Mannheim, Germany (dpa) – During construction work at a former US military barracks in the southern German city of Mannheim, workers discovered a 500-kilogramme World War II-era aerial bomb, police said on Thursday. The explosive device was to be defused on the same day, Mannheim police said in a statement. To this end, about 3,000 people in a radius of about 500 metres around the site are to be evacuated from their homes. Initially, an adjacent school with 25 students was evacuated, police said. After the discovery, about 150 police officers had initiated the evacuation. It is not uncommon for wartime ordnance to be discovered during construction work in Germany.
