17th July 2025
A transaction involving the sale of radioactive uranium has been foiled in Georgia.
Two suspects have been arrested in Georgia for the attempted sale and illegal purchase of radioactive uranium. Officers from the Counterintelligence Department and the Special Operations Department arrested a Georgian citizen and a foreign national from an EU country in Batumi who were attempting to close a deal to purchase the radioactive material for three million US dollars.
"The nuclear material in question, taking into account the strength of the alpha and gamma radiation dose and the nature of the source, is suitable, as a component, for the manufacture of various explosive devices, for carrying out terrorist acts, or for causing other serious mass and lethal consequences," according to a statement from the SGB, the Georgian security service.
The names and nationality of the arrested foreign national have not been released. The offense is punishable by five to ten years of imprisonment.
