On 11 March 2021, an Iraqi Explosives Directorate engineer died when failing to safely defuse a roadside IED near Al Najmi town in Muthanna province on the Diwaniya - Baghdad international road. The explosion injured another engineer. A Global Coalition convoy was reportedly the intended target of the IED.
