A student accidentally fired a homemade bomb inside a classroom yesterday in the US state of Michigan. Although the explosion injured six people, the case is not considered to be an intentional attack and its perpetrator has not suffered criminal sanctions. In addition to the 16-year-old student who took the bomb, four other students and a teacher were injured by the inadvertent explosion at Newaygo High School. Shortly after the incident, students from other classrooms evacuated the school, while emergency medical and police teams were called in to respond to the incident. Only the perpetrator of the explosion needed to be hospitalized for his injuries – which do not put him at risk for life – while the other people affected by the artifact sought medical assistance for minor injuries. The police did not immediately reveal what the homemade explosive was made of, or why the teenager took it to school. The blast, however, was not seen as “an attack or intended to be malicious.” “It wasn’t someone planting an explosive device to hurt our students. Those directly involved in the situation determined that that was not the intention,” Newaygo schools superintendent Peggy Mathis told Mlive. Even with no evidence that the explosion was due to a premeditated attack, the police chose to cancel classes at other schools in Newaygo County, until authorities determine that there are no more students at risk. A bomb squad and the FBI went to the school, trying to identify the composition of the explosive.
