Shell says it is investigating a "suspected unexploded ordnance" near a gas pipeline in the North Sea off Shetland.

The unidentified device was found during a routine inspection near the Flags (Far North Liquids and Associated Gas System) pipeline.

The oil and gas firm said the discovery was made about 80km (50 miles) east of Shetland.

The pipeline runs from platforms in the North Sea to the St Fergus Gas Terminal in Aberdeenshire.

Unexploded WW2 mines have previously been found near the Flags pipeline.

Shell said it was investigating the object and it had positioned a guard vessel nearby. It said the pipeline was operating normally.
