Heavy fighting broke out between M23 rebels and FARDC and Wazalendo fighters all day Thursday, January 2, in the Masisi territory of North Kivu. This was particularly true on the Lukofu-Kaniro axis, Buabo group, as well as on the Kahina axis, Bashali Mukoto group.
According to local civil society, the rebels launched simultaneous attacks on army positions on these two axes early in the morning.
According to these sources, these rebels supported by Rwanda occupied the villages of Lukofu and Kaniro. They advanced towards Katale, 12 kilometers from the capital of Masisi and encountered resistance from the FARDC.
At least two civilians, including a child under 10, were injured in the clashes in the village of Mashaki.
And several other villages are being emptied of their inhabitants in the area, the same sources report.
