Missile event in Sumy, Ukraine on Sat 21st December 2024

Over the past day, a mobile group of the explosives department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Sumy region neutralized the warhead of a Russian Kh-59 aircraft missile that was "landed" by the Ukrainian defense forces and did not explode during the fall.

Yesterday afternoon, line 102 received a message from residents of one of the settlements in Sumy region that a rocket had fallen in a field near the village.

"After arriving at the scene and inspecting the crash site, we determined that these were fragments of a Russian air-to-surface Kh-59 aircraft missile. Its warhead, weighing over 280 kilograms, did not explode, so it was neutralized on site. Then we took it to a safe place for destruction by detonation," says Igor Chernyak, head of the explosives department of the Main Police Department in Sumy region.

This is far from the first rocket of this type that police explosives technicians had to defuse during the war.

Police advise citizens to report any explosives or other suspicious objects to authorities, the military, or the police.
