A demining worker, Rahim Akbari, was critically injured on Sunday when an unexploded artillery shell from the Iran-Iraq war detonated during clearance operations in Kermanshah province.
Rahim Akbari sustained severe injuries when the heavy artillery shell exploded while he was conducting routine demining work in the Qasr-e Shirin district.
Akbari was first rushed to Abolfazl Al-Abbas Hospital in Qasr-e Shirin and later transferred to a medical facility in Kermanshah for advanced treatment.
Murad Babakhani, Deputy Governor for Political and Social Affairs in Qasr-e Shirin, confirmed the incident, referring to the victim only as a bulldozer operator without directly naming Akbari.
The explosion went off in an area still contaminated with unexploded ordnance from the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
