In a deadly ambush in Russia’s Chechen Republic on Sunday, unknown gunmen opened fire on a National Guard convoy, leaving one serviceman dead and another wounded.

The incident occurred around noon near the Petropavlovskaya station in the Groznensky District, as reported by Russian media sources.

According to initial reports, the ambush targeted a Ural military truck transporting National Guard personnel, part of Rosgvardia. Witnesses say the attack was swift, with gunmen opening fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene. A local resident, speaking anonymously, stated, “The attackers seemed well-coordinated and left before security forces could respond.”

Authorities in Chechnya have yet to identify the perpetrators, but investigations are underway to determine if this attack is linked to ongoing security challenges in the region. Chechen security forces, under the leadership of regional head Ramzan Kadyrov, have increased patrols and set up checkpoints in response to the incident.

Rosgvardia, responsible for internal security within Russia, has been active in the North Caucasus region, addressing long-standing insurgencies and separatist activities.
