On the morning of October 6, 2024, violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese army and armed movements on the one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces on the other hand in the city of El Fasher, North Darfur State, where the clashes were concentrated in the northern and eastern areas of Abu Shouk camp for displaced persons. The clashes began around 9:00 a.m. and continued until 11:30 a.m.
In a dangerous escalation, the Rapid Support Forces shelled the camp at 12:00 noon using heavy artillery. Credible eyewitness accounts reported that approximately 40 artillery shells of 65, 80 and 120 mm calibers fell inside the camp. The shells were fired from the Rapid Support Forces positions in the eastern area behind the Jebel Abu Ja camp, targeting Blocks 27 and 28 and the camp extension in Block 25 from the north, as well as Block 21 from the west. The shelling continued until 5:00 pm, resulting in the widespread destruction of civilian homes, killing 4 civilians and wounding 10 others with varying degrees of severity.
