New Mexico State Police are seeking the public's help in finding two suspects while the investigation continues for a reported shooting over the weekend in Tucumcari.
The New Mexico State Police said officers with its Investigations Bureau were requested to investigate a shooting incident that occurred about 12:20 p.m. Saturday at 621 West High St. in Tucumcari.
State police agents learned that Alex Gutierrez, 24, of Albuquerque, and another unidentified man went to a residence at 621 West High St. and knocked on the door. The occupants, a man and woman, were acquainted with Gutierrez and eventually opened the door, according to police.
Gutierrez, who was armed with a handgun, demanded his backpack that was in the residence, and the woman threw it toward him, police said. After he retrieved the backpack, Gutierrez and the male resident "engaged in a verbal confrontation concluding with Gutierrez shooting the male twice in the abdomen," police said. The injured man was taken to an area hospital, where he was in stable condition.
Following the shooting, Gutierrez and the unidentified man who he had arrived with fled the area on foot. The suspects then approached a bystander driving a white Nissan, held them up at gunpoint, and forced them to drive to Oak Street in Tucumcari, where they released the driver and fled the area, police said.
Gutierrez and the other suspect have not been located. An arrest warrant has been issued for Gutierrez on the following charges: attempted murder in the first degree, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.
