At least 20 people were killed and several properties looted and homes burned during a double attack by CODECO militiamen on Monday, September 16, in Fataki and Jina, Djugu territory (Ituri).

According to local sources, residents are in shock and trying to recover from the tragedy, but traffic on national road number 4 remains disrupted.

The same sources report that this incident occurred around midnight, the time when a group of men armed with machetes and firearms burst into two plots of land in Fataki.

In the first house, nine people were brutally hacked to death with machetes, according to a local source, before two others were killed in the neighbouring plot.

A person who tried to flee was caught and decapitated by these attackers.

The security authorities put forward a slightly different toll, reporting 10 dead, including nine women and a seven-year-old child.

On the same Monday, in Jina, a town located more than 40 km from Fataki, 10 other people were also reportedly killed.

Among them, seven CODECO militiamen, killed during a clash with members of the armed group Zaire.

A FARDC soldier was also injured by bullets, according to concordant sources.

At least three civilians were also killed, according to security sources.

Several goods, including medicines, mattresses from a local medical facility and goats, were looted by CODECO militiamen following their incursion.

This morning, the situation remained tense, although relative calm reigned in the area.
