Airplane bomb from the bottom of the pond, evacuation of 80 people

During the dredging of the pond, a 50kg unexploded ordnance was found, which turned out to be a World War II aerial bomb. Police officers evacuated around 80 people with the help of firefighters. The unexploded bomb was dealt with by military sappers.

The unexploded bomb was found on Thursday, 12 September, in Sienna while dredging a pond. A police officer from the non-stationary mine and pyrotechnic reconnaissance group initially determined that it was an unexploded ordnance dating back to World War II. Pending the arrival of sappers, the dangerous object was secured by Leipzig uniformed officers.

Bomb disposal and evacuation

On Friday, 13 September, military sappers arrived on site and decided to evacuate around 80 residents from nearby single-family homes, businesses and shops.

- Police officers secured the area where the unexploded ordnance was located and designated a safety zone. Firefighters from Leipzig also supported the operation. The evacuation went quickly and smoothly. Operations were completed when sappers seized the unexploded ordnance and transported it to the firing range for neutralisation. The evacuated persons were able to return to their place of residence," describes asp. Monika Karasińska of the Leipzig police.
