Michoacán.- Ángel Ríos Hernández , commissioner of the Civil Guard in the Tierra Caliente region of Michoacán, was injured, along with three of his escorts, when a landmine detonated as his patrol passed by, in the municipality of Buenavista Tomatlán,
The police commander and his three bodyguards were transferred in three helicopters to a hospital in Morelia , where they are reported to be out of danger.
According to preliminary information from the Civil Guard, the explosion of the homemade landmine occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the town of Punta de Agua , one of the areas where clashes between four drug cartels are taking place on Thursday.
Along with Angel Rios, nicknamed "The Coyote" among police officers , his escorts , identified as Marco Antonio Gutierrez Jimenez, Edgar Rodriguez Alvarado and Blanca Estela Ayala Leon, were injured .
The four officers were transported to Morelia in three state government aircraft, although the officers' health is considered to be out of danger.
This Thursday, four drug cartels, divided into two groups , exchanged gunfire in communities in the municipalities of Apatzingán, Buenavista and Tepalcatepec.
The wave of violence has led to roadblocks linking the three municipalities , where at least three vehicles have been set on fire. Schools in the region have decided to suspend classes.
One of the groups is made up of the criminal organizations Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel ( CJNG ) and Los Viagras (Cárteles Unidos), while the second is made up of the Tepalcatepec Cartel and Los Caballeros Templarios.
These criminal groups are fighting for control of the production and trafficking of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as other activities such as kidnapping and extortion of lemon producers, ranchers, farmers, merchants, transporters and businessmen .
