A family home was targetted with an explosive device - and a petrol bomb was thrown at a pub - in two separate incidents overnight in Cork City. In one incident, a shot was fired before an explosive device was thrown at a house.

At the well-known Murphy's Rock pub in Ballyvolane, there was a major Garda and Fire Brigade response to an alarm at around 10.30PM last night after two men who had tried to gain entry to the premises became involved in a dispute with staff.

CorkBeo understands that one of the men made threats to staff as patrons outside the main door watched. A short while afterwards, a number of people arrived in the carpark and went to the entrance to the pub - what is believed to have been a petrol bomb was thrown. Cork City Fire Brigade and the Gardai responded quickly and there was minimal damage to the outside of the premises.

Videos shared widely on social media show two units of Cork City Fire Brigade and a strong garda response as shocked patrons watch a small fire being extinguished. There was some smoke inside the premises but no serious damage. One local resident told CorkBeo that they heard a 'loud bang' on the Ballincollie Road and the area was soon "swarming with Gardai".

Gardai have said that a man in his 30s was arrested in connection with an incident of criminal damage at a business premises on the Ballincollie Road in Ballyvolane and investigations are ongoing.

Seperatedly in Ballyvolane last night, the Defence Forces Bomb Disposal Team from Collins Barracks were tasked to a house where an explosive device - believed to be a military-spec grenade - was thrown at a house in Meadow Park Avenue.
