A 25-year-old man has died and two people are injured after a shooting on Drottninggatan in central Gävle during the night of Sunday.

- It is a place in central Gävle where there were a lot of people. So quite a few people have seen and heard the incident, says Mathias Rutegård at the police.

Several people alerted the police at half past four in the morning about loud bangs.

A man with a gunshot wound was found at the scene and he was taken to hospital by ambulance. The police say that he received life-saving treatment on the spot.

But his life could not be saved. On Sunday morning, the police announced that a 25-year-old man had died.

Two more men have been injured in connection with the incident. The police write that their injuries should not be life-threatening. One of the men has been shot in the leg - the other in the arm.

The incident must have taken place outdoors on a street where several nightclubs and restaurants are located. The police are now working to interview witnesses and carry out technical investigations at the scene.

- We have many witnesses and are anxious if more people have seen and heard things from the evening, says Rutegård.

The three victims are already known to the police.

- They appear in our systems and we have been aware of them for a long time, says Rutegård.

The police have a large resource at the scene and are working to create a clearer picture of what has happened.

- There is no person deprived of liberty or arrested. It is a work in progress, but we are looking for one or more perpetrators, says Rutegård and adds:

- We always have in our back pocket when it comes to serious violent crimes that it may be a criminal environment, but it is too early to talk about such things at the moment.

The police have launched a preliminary investigation into murder, attempted murder and serious weapons offences.

Shortly after lunchtime, the police checked a car just a stone's throw from the crime scene. SVT's reporter on the spot says that three people were checked and that a police patrol took one of the people away.

A search dog is currently going through the vehicle at around 1:15 p.m.

Police could not say at the time if anyone had been arrested - or if it was related to the night's fatal shooting. At 3:15 p.m., the police announced that the arrest cannot be connected to the fatal shooting, but that cars were checked precisely because of the night's incident.

SVT has had several reporters on site in central Gävle during the morning and afternoon.

Around lunchtime on Sunday, the cordons at the crime scene were lifted.
