At least one child was killed with four others injured in an explosion of unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from past wars in south Afghanistan's Kandahar province, spokesman for provincial police Mullah Asadullah Jamshidi said Tuesday.The mishap took place in the province's Dand district. The children found the device and began playing with it when it exploded rapidly, killing one kid on the spot and injuring four others, Jamshidi added.The injured have been transported by security forces to a nearby hospital for treatment.A total of 292 people lost their lives following blasts of landmines and explosive remnants of war in the past six months, 88 percent of whom were children, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on Sunday.Afghanistan is one of the most heavily contaminated countries with landmines and unexploded ordnances from over four decades of wars and civil strife. These dangerous remnants claim the lives of at least a dozen people, mostly children, each month.
