25th November 2005
A GammaMat TSI 3/I equipment - matr. 156, containing a 1.92 TBq Iridium 192 source, was stolen in South Italy on November 25th 2005, together with the lorry used for its transportation. The equipment, used for non destructive tests, was in secured position at the time it was stolen. The event was notified to the National Safety Authority by the competent police department, according to the applicable procedure. The local authorities were alerted on the potential risk that could arise as a consequence of improper use of the equipment, leaving them to evaluate the opportunity to eventually alert the general public.
On March 7th 2006 the GammaMat equipment was found, with the source in secured position, on the side of a public road at about 150 Km far away from the place it had been stolen. The equipment appears to be well preserved.
Consequently the event can be re-rated at level 1 of the INES scale.
