18th October 2017
A radiation monitor alarm triped on October 10, 2017 at Pudong International Airport. The alarm was set off by contaminated currency carried by a male passenger. The notes were contaminated by Americium-241, according to the Shanghai Airport Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. This was the first time that banknotes severely contaminated by radioactivity were found at a Shanghai port, the bureau said. The male passenger's contaminated money was confiscated but he was allowed to go free and is considered an innocent party in the matter, officials said. As of the reporting date, the investigation is still under way, but no further details are available.
