Idaho State University discovered one of its 14 one gram pieces of weapons grade plutonium missing when conducting an inventory. The sample was used for research purposes. School documents from 2003 and 2004 state that the material was awaiting disposal at the time, but no proof could be produced that it had been properly disposed of. The incident was discovered on October 13, 2017 and the NRC was later notified. The NRC proposed a fine of $8,500 for negligence.
