Radiation detectors at the Roxbury Transfer Station in Roxbury, MA detected a radiation source in a trash load. The station consultant surveyed the trash and separated the source, then transported radioactive trash to Atlantic Nuclear where analysis determined that the source contained about 90 uCi of RA226. The source had a dose rate of 15 mrem/hr about 1 in from the object. The station consultant separated the source from the trash bag, and the source is being stored at Atlantic Nuclear until it is properly disposed of. The Massachusetts Radiation Control Program is continuing the investigation into the event.
