On March 20, 2015, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, it was confirmed that items containing licensed radioactive material had been converted into scrap metal and sent offsite to an unknown smelter. The missing NI63 source materials, which are used for narcotics, chemicals and explosives detection purposes, are believed to have been disposed of sometime around April 30, 2014. The Department of the Army is trying to ascertain where this material ended up.
