CBRN event in Tyrol, Innsbruck area, Austria on Sat 14th March 2015
14th March 2015
On March 14, 2015, the Italian border control detected a radioactive source in a railcar transporting scrap metal at the Austrian-Italian border station. The CS137 source was located in a container left with the shutter open. Originally, the source was used in 1999 in an Austrian mining company. After the mine underwent a revision, the source was sent to a scrap metal facility, and then was shipped to Italy. Measures have been taken to raise awareness and better control of radioactive sources in the future as a result of this event.
