23rd June 2014
On June 24, 2014, Schnitzer Steel Industries notified OR Radiation Protection Services [RPS] that it had acquired a truckload of scrap from Idaho containing a CS137 fixed gauge. Following an investigation, the gauge was found to be heavily damaged and “partially open.” On June 23, the gauge was moved from the truck to a “secured metal bin” by a Schnitzer employee, where it remains stored. According to a June 25 exposure measurement, this individual is thought to have received an estimated dose of 1.50 mrem as a result of gauge reconstruction. Following the incident, the manufacturer was contacted and an investigation is currently being conducted into the gauge’s history. The gauge has been classified as waste.
