On January 20, 2014, Simms Metal Recycling in Petersburg, Virginia received a load of scrap metal that set off the radiation monitoring detector. After inspection, Simms determined that the radioactive object was a Perkin Elmer liquid scintillation analyzer. On January 28, 2014, Perkin Elmer removed the source for disposal. The analyzer's source activity was 18 mCi of either BA133 or NI63. The source was later determined to be BA133.
