On the week of March 24 2014, the Environmental Police revealed that one of the compactors used in the collection of solid waste in the city of Naples, Italy, was contaminated with radioactive material. The authorities retraced the route taken by the waste collectors which included several nuclear medicine hospitals and research centers, inspecting each waste site. The inspections showed that Monaldi Hospital had a large amount of radioactive hospital waste in its dumpster and thus the origin of the contamination of the trash compactor. Further tests and review of procedures will determine liability.
