22nd June 2015
Customs officials at the Sheremetyevo Airport detained a 47 year-old Russian man for attempting to smuggle into Russia 56 kg of radioactive jewelry from China. The 750 black pendants were determined to have a radiation level 15 times higher than natural levels due to contamination with Thorium-232. Though the man was initially detained, he was released pending the results of an investigation into whether he knew the pendants were radioactive. According to the man under investigation, the pendants were purchased in Guangzhou as a gift for his employees. News outlets report that the man is the CEO of a Moscow firm.
