CBRN event in California, Milpitas area, United States of America on Mon 8th April 2013
8th April 2013
Electronics recycling company, West Tech, Inc., purchased an auction lot of industrial equipment in Milpitas, CA. The purchase was delivered to West Tech, Inc. in Sparks, NV. A CPN density gauge was subsequently discovered in the lot. The gauge contained 50 mCi AM241 and 10 mCi CS137. The State of Nevada Radiation Control Program inspected the gauge, found no contamination, and then had it impounded. A subsequent report indicated that American Soil Testing notified the California Radiologic Health Branch, on December 5, 2012, that the licensee's storage facility had been broken into and that two CPN density gauges were stolen. The licensee was advised to post a notice and reward in the local newspapers and on craigslist and to notify local law enforcement. Due to miscommunication, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was not notified of the incident until April 8, 2013. As of the April 16, 2013 report, one density gauge is still missing.
