5th August 2015
On August 5, 2015, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Office in Ivano-Frankivsk and the SBU Central Office detained four members of a criminal group for the attempted sale of what they indicate is likely U238. Law officials seized the nuclear material after one of the suspects attempted to move the material across Ukraine's border with Romania in a vehicle. Two of the individuals in question were citizens of Ukraine; the others were unidentified. The SBU continues to investigate the incident. The Western State Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspectorate of the State Emergency Service and the State Health and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine conducted a radiological survey of the material. Examination of the material will likely continue.
