CBRN event in Odessa Oblast, Odessa area, Ukraine on Fri 20th October 2017
20th October 2017
On October 20, 2017, Customs officers detained two containers with a radioactive load in the Odessa Commercial Sea Port in Ukraine. The containers transported magnesium scrap from the United Arab Emirates for one of the Ukrainian enterprises. The cargo was detained after triggering the radioactive control system. Based on the results of the measurements, the excess of the exposure dose rate on the container surface was 3.5 µSv / h and 6.5 µSv / h respectively. Remote spectrometric analysis determined that the radiation was a result of the presence of Ra-226 radionuclides contained in containers hidden in the middle of the containers. Odessa customs decided to return the goods to the sender. On November 13, 2017, the material was returned to sender.
