CBRN event in Kiev, Kiev area, Ukraine on Fri 3rd April 2015
3rd April 2015
On April 3, 2015, workers at the incineration plant in Kiev noticed an increase in background radiation in one of the garbage trucks. The rescue department of the Main Directorate used a dosimeter to determine that radiation on the right side of the truck was 100 times the normal background radiation. A radioactive element that had been disposed of and was picked up by the truck was found to be the source of the radiation. The rescue team speculated that the radiation source might have come from an x-ray machine or a smoke detector that had been disposed of. It was determined that the radiation it produced was not harmful. A special commission is working on the seizure and disposal of the contaminated object.
