A beach in Cornwall remains cordoned off after a suspected unexploded bomb was found. The area is sealed off around the item at Trevaunance Cove, St Agnes.

The St Agnes Coastguard team were alerted to the discovery of the suspected Second World War munition by lifeguards at around 1.40pm yesterday (Sunday, June 9). The item is set to be assessed by specialists in due course.

St Agnes Coastguard Search and Rescue Team said: "Team were alerted to Trevaunance cove after the lifeguards on duty had found some ordnance. We assisted Beach lifeguards with a cordon whilst specialist advice was sought from EOD (explosive ordnance device).

"Mitigating action was taken to reduce the risk to Beach users and the item will be assessed by EOD specialists in due course. If you see anything suspicious on the beach, please remember to call 999 and ask for the coastguard."

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they were alerted by the RNLI yesterday to a suspected World War Two bomb at Trevaunance cove, St Agnes. HM Coastguard then took primacy of the matter and the area was cordoned off.

The Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were then called to examine the device. However, police have said the object then covered again by the tide.

St Agnes Coastguard said in an update yesterday: "The team were tasked back to Trevanance Cove this afternoon to monitor the ordnance that was uncovered yesterday.

"Lifeguards had raised the red flags and cordoned off the area of the beach. We advise keeping away from this area of the beach until either the Beach Lifeguards or the Coastguard advise otherwise."
