On 3 January 2021, 5 suspected BIFF militants were killed after military attack helicopters fired at them as they were reportedly escaping toward the towns of Talayan, Datu Saudi Ampatuan and Datu Unsay (Maguindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao). The militants had just carried out an ambush against government officials and relief workers in Barangay Pandan, South Upi earlier that day (coded separately). Later, the military fired mortars and rockets at the direction of the escaping militants.
