On 5 January 2021, a remote controlled IED by Al Shabaab militants detonated, targeting a vehicle owned by a police spokesman as it passed near 21 October junction road neighborhood in Mogadishu-Waaberi district (Waaberi, Banadir). The device missed the target and the vehicle passed the area before the explosion. At least one civilian bystander was killed while the blast injured two others.
