Newark authorities deal with unexploded WWI-era ordnance 

NEWARK – Nearby residents had to be evacuated as Newark police officers and firefighters and the Columbus bomb squad responded to a report of unexploded ordnance believed to be from the Worl War I era found in a garage.

Officers and firefighters were advised when they arrived on the scene E. Main Parkway Wednesday that a device resembling a mortar shell while cleaning out the garage for an auction, Division of Police spokesman Sgt. Chuck Wilhelm said.
The item was placed in the yard and emergency units were called. Fire police secured the area and began evacuating nearby residents, Wilhelm said.
The Columbus Bomb Squad responded and learned from military sources that the item was unexploded ordnance from the time of the First World War more than a century ago.
The Columbus Bomb Squad took possession of the device and transported it to a designated area for destruction, Wilhelm said.
