On 17 March 2024, at around 3:30 am Sanaa time, suspected Houthi forces fired 1 anti-ship missile targeting the Mado LPG tanker (IMO: 9694622) in the Gulf of Aden around 85 nm east of Aden. There were no fatalities or injuries as the missile impacted the water and exploded 200 meters from the ship. Houthi forces claimed a missile attack targeting the Mado on 19 March claiming US affiliation of the ship presumably referring to this event. The ship was targeted in the South Red Sea on 15 March and in the Gulf of Aden on 17 March. The ship previously had links to US company ExxonMobil although the links did not exist anymore at the time of the attack according to MarineTraffic.
