The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad responded to a report of an unexploded, World War II-era hand grenade in Stow on Friday and determined the device to be inert, according to authorities. The Stow Police and Fire departments received a call shortly before 2:20 p.m. Friday about a Concord resident who walked into the lobby of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services’ office building in Stow to report they found an unexploded hand grenade. The individual told authorities the device was in the truck of their vehicle, the Stow Fire Department said in a statement. First responders arrived quickly, and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad went to the scene immediately to establish a safe area so the grenade could be examined, according to the department’s statement. After closer examination and investigation, the device, a World War II-era Mk. 2 “Pineapple” fragmentation grenade, was determined to be inert. It was likely used as a sample in training exercises, the statement said. It was quickly determined there was no danger, the statement noted. “I would like to remind all residents to call 911 immediately if you find something suspicious or that resembles any kind of military ordinance,” Stow Fire Chief John P. Benoit said in the statement. “Do not attempt to move or handle any potential explosive. Leave the area and let first responders handle the situation professionally.”
