Part of a beach was cordoned off after what was thought to be an unexploded bomb was found. Dog walkers discovered the metal object at around 11am on Sunday morning and police blocked off access to part of Widemouth Beach near Bude in Cornwall. A bomb disposal unit was dispatched from Plymouth – and when they arrived they realised the item was not an ordnance or explosive. Even though it wasn’t explosive, a Royal Navy spokesperson thanked the people who reported the object and didn’t touch it themselves. The spokesperson said: ‘Naval teams attended the scene, assessed what it was and found it was a non-ordnance. The object was not explosive. ‘It was a metal cylinder which has been rolling around in the sea. As it rolled around, it had built a sort of crust on it. ‘When the teams cleared it away, they found it was just a metal cylinder. It wasn’t a bomb. It wasn’t an ordnance at all. ‘The team is closing the task down and will be returning back to base in Devonport. ‘They have done their assessment, notified police, declared it a non-ordnance and will returning to base.’ It’s only been a few days since more than 3,000 homes were evacuated from Plymouth after a World War II bomb was discovered in a woman’s back garden. The unexploded bomb was – carefully – transported through the town’s narrow streets before it was taken out to sea and blown up. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Police were called at 11.15am on Sunday, March 3 to Widemouth Bay, Bude, following reports that an unexploded ordnance had been found on the beach. ‘Officers put a cordon in place around the device. ‘The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended to make the device safe at around 3.30pm.’
