5 houses and a car have been damaged in an explosion. The explosion happened on Monday night in the Deurne district of Antwerp. Two hours later three lorries were set on fire on the Straatsburgdok in the port of Antwerp. It is as yet unclear whether the two incidents are connected. At around 11pm on Monday the Tweemontstraat, near to the Sportpaleis events centre was shaken by an explosion. At least 5 houses were damaged in the blast. A parked car also sustained damage in the explosion.A local resident told VRT News that first a fire was started at the front door of a house and that this was followed shortly afterwards by an explosion. The local police went to the scene and the street was cordoned off to allow them to gather evidence. They were assisted by explosives experts from the bomb disposal service DOVO and by officers from the Federal Police Service. It is as yet unclear as to whether the incident was connected to the ongoing spiral of drug-related violence in Antwerp.A couple of hours later at around 1am 3 lorries were set on fire at the Straatsburgdok in the port of Antwerp. The lorries were parked within a 150-metre radius of each other.The Antwerp Fire Service was able to extinguish the fires. Here too forensics officers from the Federal Police service attended the scene.
