3rd March 2024
A harrowing event unfolded in the Aghdam district of Azerbaijan, casting a spotlight on the persistent danger of landmines in conflict-affected areas. Bakhtiyar Abbasov, a 29-year-old local, encountered an anti-personnel mine that detonated, leading to traumatic injuries. This incident underscores the ongoing risks in regions once marred by conflict, despite efforts to clear landmines.
While grazing cattle in the Ahmadaghaly village, near the former contact line in Aghdam, Abbasov stumbled upon an anti-personnel mine, triggering an explosion that resulted in the amputation of both legs. The area, not yet cleared of mines, remains a silent but deadly reminder of past conflicts. Emergency services swiftly responded, transporting Abbasov to Barda Central District Hospital for urgent surgical intervention. Dr. Rasim Abdullayev, attending the case, described Abbasov's condition as severe.
